Mayo Mayhem invites windsurfers from abroad to come and share the fun and join our event. Here you will find some information to help you plan your amazing trip to Ireland and Mayo Mayhem .
The weather in Ireland at the end of September can vary hugely day by day . It can be a warm 20 degrees of clear skies to Storm Chase wet and windy 10/12 degrees so you need to pack for all conditions.
The water temperature at this time of year is still around 16/17 degrees. This means if you are free sailing a 4/3 suit with short arm can still be ok . However as it’s a competition and you could be in your suit for the whole day than a 5/3 would be a better choice. There is no need for boots, gloves or hoods to keep you warm . Boots/ crocks might be useful for getting past the stones to the sandy beach .
If you plan on attending you have two options.
1) Book flights and accommodation last minute based on seeing a great forecast, this is obviously the best way to guarantee that the event is on. The only risk is will flight and accommodation be available on the times and days needed.
2) Book in advance to guarantee accommodation, time of work and allow travel time especially if you are driving. In this situation we would suggest that you plan to arrive in Ireland on the Thursday (the day before the event) and stay for 12 days. Leaving on the Monday after the Roll over weekend. This means over the 12 day stay there are 5 possible competition days. This time of year there is a very good chance of getting one competition day out of these 5 days.
Travel.
You can fly into Dublin, Shannon or Belfast then hire a car or van and travel across to Mayo. The driving time from both Dublin and Belfast airports is about 4 hours while Shannon is about 3 hours.
Ferry / Boat
There are a few ferry options depending on where you are travelling from. Ferries arrive into 4 main ports. Dublin, Belfast, Rosslare and Cork. Drive time from Dublin, Cork and Belfast is 4 hours, from Rosslare is about 5.30.
Accommodation for the first weekend would need to be booked in advance due to the festival places books out. If we do a roll over then accommodation is usually plentiful. Please contact us in advance and we can advise on how to manage booking last minute based on the forecast. The estimated price to rent a 3 bed house for Thursday to Sunday is approx. €350. B&B is approx. €50 per night. There are a few camping option available from around €10 per night
We have a very active Whats app group where people post offers of accommodation and travel sharing.
